Kenny Roberts returned to Laguna Seca in July of 1982 to do battle with Freddie Spencer in the 15th round of the AMA Grand National Championship. Armed with a Yamaha OW61, Roberts followed Spencer home in the first leg and won the second leg and the overall when Spencer's Honda suffered a cracked cylinder head. Randy Mamola ended up second on the day via his 3-2 tally from the two races.
